PERSONALITY:
Lan Wangji is a stern, powerful, and righteous cultivator (basically a magician and fighter, based on Daoism) of the righteous Gusu Lan sect who is known to be “where the chaos is”.
Though he is at first strict and decisive, quick to enforce rules like a disciplinarian, he does not lack sympathy. When the Yunmeng Jiang sect disciples arrive at the Cloud Recesses, but they’ve left their entry token at their hotel, Lan Wangji at first tells them all that they simply can’t enter if they have no token. After the Yunmeng Jiang sect are forced to wait outside at night, without a hotel open in the nearby city, it’s later revealed that he’s the one who allows them in anyway. As time goes on and his life is affected by Wei Wuxian - a man not afraid to go against public opinion or break whatever rules to do what’s right - he starts to question the way he’s been brought up and how to view right and wrong.
He’s cold and a bit distant to most people. Part of this is caused by the complicated situation of his parents and the loss of his mother at an age too young to fully understand what had happened. In the hope that the situation would never repeat, his uncle raised both him and his brother to strictly adhere to the rules of the sect, which emphasizes discipline and righteousness over all. At most times, he speaks with as few words as possible that’s needed to explain what he needs to say at the moment, usually uttering a sound of affirmation. This makes it hard to explain himself and his feelings. He also claims to not like touching strangers. Even during his teenage years, his cold aura and swiftness to punish rule breakers is why most people only see spending time with him as a punishment. Later on in life, his coldness manifests more as having stopped caring about how others will see his actions, like destroying another sect’s expensive magical devices or casting a silencing spell on someone from another, more powerful sect.
Naturally, he also has a soft side that becomes more apparent through the series. He buys toys for a poor child and lets him sit on his lap, despite having claimed to be averse to touching strangers. He cares for the rabbits that live in the Cloud Recesses. Most of all, he becomes the softest towards the troublemaker Wei Wuxian, despite how much he pushed said troublemaker away.
He is extremely disciplined. As long as he is in a safe position to do so, he will go to sleep exactly at nine o’ clock PM, and rise at five o’clock AM. With his abilities and constantly improving his cultivation, and being proficient in the Six Arts, he’s among the most powerful cultivators of his generation. Even his white boots are cleaner than most people’s clothes, his appearance always immaculate. But after just one drink, he fools around as a troublemaking teen would - chasing chickens, writing graffiti - as an outlet for what he never had the chance to do before, which he wouldn’t dare do sober. Only in this drunken state does he begin to proclaim his true feelings.
Justice has always been his guiding principle since he was a child. He’s known to go where the chaos is, always helping everyone, even if the work is less glamorous and isn’t what a member of a large and distinguished sect would pursue. The common, non-powered people adore him for it, other cultivators find him strange for it, but he never lets the opinions of others affect him either way. Along with Wei Wuxian, he goes against one of the most politically powerful figures in the whole cultivation world in order to resolve a mystery.

REASON: Lan Wangji is very much a doer. If there is a problem he can do something about, he will be there, especially if people are in danger. He also does not like to make judgments without all of the facts at hand, only carefully considering the evidence first. He doesn’t let himself get swept up in public perception or gossip and he sticks to his moral code when dealing with others.
TATTOO: Waxing crescent moon, left chest
SAMPLES
NETWORK:
I am Lan Zhan, courtesy name Wangji. I have not been tricked or bewitched by Wei Ying. I knew his identity right away.
He is not the one who poses any danger. If you join this proposed siege upon the Burial Mounds, you will fall for the trap set by Lianfang-zun.
[Lan Wangji would not usually use his words, spoken or otherwise, so lightly. He also knows that his words will likely go ignored, but he at least has to try to dissuade some of the angry mob that might possibly listen.
To those who respond with only more accusations, he will still try persuade them. Even if those who accuse Wei Wuxian do incense him, that doesn't mean they deserve to die.]
You will gain nothing by taking part in this. Stay home.
